In winter season most people develop dry skin condition which is not an issue but it could be threatening if left unattended. Let's dive into it.
Definition:
Dry skin, also known as xerosis or xeroderma, has many causes. It's a common condition that affects people of all ages.
Skin dryness often leads to itchy, scaling and cracked skin.
Symptoms:
- Skin tightening.
- Rough skin.
- Itching
- Scaling or peeling
- Skin cracking
- Reddish on white skin or Grayish on brown/black skin.
- Deep crack that may bleed
Causes:
- Excessive use of chemical products on skin.
- Rough weather conditions like dry air, changing of seasons.
- Too much hot water in shower or spending too much time in the hot shower.
- Too much use of soap which wipes away your skin moisture.
- Dehydration: lack of water in the body.
- Any skin conditions like cancer, eczema or diabetes is the reason for your skin dryness.
Who & how you could develop:
- Anyone can have dry skin condition but it is more likely to develop if
- You are above 40 because skin’s ability to retain moisture decreases with age. 🧓
- You live in a cold, windy or low-humidity climate. ☁️
- Using hands to work with cement, clay or soil. 👷
- Swimming more frequently in chlorinated pools.
- Different skin conditions like hypothyroidism, diabetes or nutrition deficiency.
How to prevent:
- Moisturise your skin properly every two hours if you are outdoors, swimming more oftenly and sweating. Use glycerin or sunblock.
- Don’t spend more than 10 minutes in the bath 🚿 and don’t take shower more than once a day.
- Use moderately warm water. 🌊
- Use fragrance free soap. If you wash your hands more often than apply moisture on your hands properly.
- Cover your skin as much as possible in harsh weather conditions.
- Wear gloves 🧤 while gardening, using harsh cleaners.
